Here we're going to talk about your heartbeat and the electrical control behind the heartbeat.

So the first thing to note is that the electrical control behind the heartbeat does not come from the nervous system.

In other words, it's not neurogenic.

It is myogenic, meaning it starts in the heart muscle.

And where it starts is here in the wall of the right atrium, close to where the blood is coming back to the body, you have a node called the sinoatrial node, the s -a -node, sino -atrial node.

And the sino -atrial node is essentially the pacemaker of the heart.

It tells the heart, when to beat.

The way it does that is it has pacemaker cells in this node, and when ion channels in these cells open, and ions are released into the cell, to cover the cell membrane, it starts an action potential.

So it depolarizes the cell membrane, creating an action potential.

This action potential depolarization travels across the atria causing them to contract.

And so both atria contract as a result of this depolarization that comes from the sinoatrial node.

Now, once the action potential gets to the action potential gets to the bottom of the atria, it cannot proceed down into the ventricles because there is insulating tissue between the top and bottom of the heart.

So there is another node right here at the bottom of the atria between the right and left atria...
