Brewster's Angle

Brewster's angle is the specific angle of incidence at which light, upon reflection from a surface, becomes completely polarized. At this angle, the reflection coefficient for the component of light polarized parallel to the plane of incidence drops to zero, meaning that the reflected light is fully polarized perpendicular to that plane. It is calculated using the relationship tan(?_B) = n?/n?, where n? and n? are the refractive indices of the initial and transmitting media.

Polarization and Electric Field Orientation

Polarization describes the directional orientation of the electric field oscillations in a light wave. When light is reflected at Brewster's angle, only the component with an electric field oscillating perpendicular to the plane of incidence survives. This means that in the reflected light, the electric field oscillates parallel to the surface of the reflecting medium, as the plane of incidence includes the normal to the surface.
