Centre of Mass

The centre of mass is the point where the mass of an object or system can be considered to be concentrated for the purposes of analysis of translational motion. It is an intrinsic property of the body that remains constant regardless of its orientation or movement, assuming no mass is added or removed from the system.

Centre of Gravity

The centre of gravity is the point where the gravitational force appears to act on the body. In a uniform gravitational field, it coincides with the centre of mass; however, in non-uniform fields the two points can differ because the gravitational force may vary over the extent of the body.

Uniform Gravitational Field Effect

In a uniform gravitational field, the gravitational force is constant across the extent of the object, resulting in the centre of gravity and the centre of mass being the same. This concept explains why, under uniform gravity, movements within the body do not alter the centre of mass, even though the effective point where gravity acts (centre of gravity) might seem to change when non-uniformity is involved.
