Cardiac Cycle

The cardiac cycle describes the sequence of mechanical and electrical events that enable the heart to pump blood. It consists of phases such as systole (contraction) and diastole (relaxation), during which the atria and ventricles work in coordinated succession to ensure efficient blood flow throughout the body.

Ventricular Diastolic Filling

Ventricular diastolic filling is the phase when the ventricles relax and blood flows into them from the atria. This process is largely passive, driven by a pressure gradient between the atria and the ventricles, and accounts for the majority of ventricular filling, making it a critical component of effective cardiac function.

Passive vs. Active Filling

During the diastolic phase, filling of the ventricles occurs largely through passive mechanisms due to the pressure difference between the atria and ventricles. Although atrial contraction (an active process) provides an extra boost to ventricular filling near the end of diastole, the bulk of blood flow into the ventricles is achieved passively, underscoring the efficiency of the heart's relaxation phase.
