Question
Answered step-by-step
Not all of the following application problems involve only subtraction. Some involve addition as well. Be sure to read each problem carefully.Wind Energy The bar chart below shows the states producing the most wind energy in 2006.a. Use the information in the bar chart to fill in the missing entries in the table.$$\begin{array}{|l|l|} \hline \text { State } & \text { Energy (megawatts) } \\ \hline \text { Texas } & \\ \text { California } & \\ \text { Iowa } & \\ & 818 \\ \hline \end{array}$$b. Okay, We're going to start this problem by finding the linear equation, which models that energy use as a function of the year. And we have to ordered pairs so we'll go ahead and start by finding the slope 6.5 minus 3.5 over 2000 minus 1970. And that gives us three divided by 30. So that reduces to 1/10. And after that we can go ahead and take one of our points and use our point slope form and find the equation of the line. So we have why minus 3.5 equals 1/10 times X minus 1970 and we can distribute the 1/10. Why minus 3.5 equals 1/10 X minus 1 97 And then we can add 3.5 to both sides and we get y equals 1/10 x minus 1 90 3.5. Okay, so that's the equation that models the situation. And now we'll move on to Part B. So we're going to use the equation that we found in part A to make a prediction about the energy use in the year 2010. So we're going to substitute 2010 into the equation for X and sell for. Why, When we multiply 2010 by 1/10 we get 201 and then we subtract 1 93.5 and that gives us 7.5. So what that's telling us is that 7.5 bilion tons of oil would be used in 2010.
