In this video we want to predict what types of ions different elements will form using the periodic table.

So first we have thallium, atomic number 81.

So it's the first element in a p -block, right? so typically we have in the s -block plus one and plus two ions, tending to lose one and two electrons to satisfy the octet rule.

And then we get plus three variable.

Usually these elements in group four don't form ions.

So on that basis we'd say thallium is plus three.

But because there's a lot of d -orbitals here in between and you have this, it's a post -transition metal, it's possible for it to just lose that p electron and keep its s electrons which are well shielded.

Substances in the higher periods like aluminum don't tend to form that because they don't have the shielding.

So they'd lose the p and the s electrons and form plus three.
