Pangenesis

Pangenesis is a historical theory of inheritance proposed by Darwin which posits that all cells of the body emit tiny particles called gemmules. These gemmules, thought to contain the information of their parent cells, were believed to circulate throughout the organism and come together in the reproductive organs, thereby transmitting traits from all parts of the body to the offspring. This theory was intended to explain phenomena such as inheritance of acquired characteristics and the blending of traits observed in organisms.

Germ-plasm Theory

The germ-plasm theory, developed by August Weismann, asserts that heredity is exclusively determined by the germ cells (sperm and eggs) and that these cells contain a distinct material—germ plasm—that is separate and insulated from the somatic (body) cells. This theory negates the influence of acquired traits on heredity by maintaining a strict division between the reproductive cells and the rest of the body, thus challenging ideas that characteristics gained during an organism’s lifetime can be passed to offspring.
