If we have these two examples and want signed numbers, then we're asking for positives and negatives. So reading the words carefully will help us decide. In the first example, it says that we have a loss of $15 million. So when we talk about a loss, we're talking about that number being at a negative amount. We're losing 15 million in the next example is says that we're building a foundation 5/16 of an inch above ground here. Since we're above ground, that's going to be a positive amount. Now we can put the positive symbol, but we don't have to.
