Hi, in this video, we're going to look at the idea of competition, ecological competition.
00:10
There's an example in the book, life, the science of biology, 10th edition.
00:14
There's an example where they talk about salmonella, the bacteria that causes the type of food poisoning that you're probably familiar with.
00:26
And so, and we know that salmonella is associated with poultry quite often.
00:35
And so there have been some experiments on chicken to try and reduce the quantity of salmonella that shows up in processed food.
00:51
And in this particular experiment that they talked about, they took a control group that they gave no treatment to.
01:01
And they took an experimental group.
01:04
And to the experimental group, they inoculated or actually caused these chickens to ingest three different types of non -harmful bacteria.
01:17
So those are over here on the right.
01:20
So the chickens that ingested the non -harmful bacteria ended up having a lower quantity of salmonella in their digestive tracts, which means, obviously, they couldn't pass that on during the processing and it couldn't get on the meat.
01:40
And so that chicken was safer for human consumption.
01:44
So what's going on here is the idea of exploitation competition, that within the gut tract of the chicken, salmonella could not survive well because there was competition from these three other types of bacteria that are all, they're all trying to get the food that's going through the chick's digestive system...
