This question is about cheating in nature, and in particular, cheating in the flower pollinator mutualism that the book talks about.

So flowers, as you know, normally when they're insect pollinated, produce nectar, and pollinators visit those flowers, get some nectar, and in turn, sort of accidentally move pollen around from flower to flower.

But they don't necessarily both have to do that.

So flowers can cheat by making no nectar, which saves them energy.

And pollinators can cheat by stealing nectar by not going in through the mouth of the flower, but cutting in from the side.

And so how can that happen? so if we want, say, to prevent flowers, you know, how can we end up with a situation where pollinators are avoiding flowers with no nectar? so pollinators, for example, should be very good at discerning which flowers have nectar and which ones don't, because they're just wasting their time if they're trying to get nectar from a nectarless flower.
