Electromagnetic Induction

This is the fundamental principle by which transformers operate. A changing magnetic flux through a coil induces an electromotive force (emf) in that coil, as described by Faraday’s law. The magnitude of the induced emf is directly proportional to both the rate of change of the magnetic flux and the number of loops (turns) in the coil.

Transformer Turns Ratio

The transformer turns ratio, defined as the ratio of the number of turns in the secondary coil to that in the primary coil, directly determines the relationship between secondary and primary voltages. A reduction in the number of turns in the secondary coil leads to a proportional decrease in the induced voltage, because the voltage induced per turn remains constant for a given flux change.

Conservation of Energy in Transformers

Transformers are designed to ideally conserve energy (minus minor losses). This means that the input power (voltage multiplied by current in the primary circuit) is approximately equal to the output power (voltage multiplied by current in the secondary circuit). As a result, if the secondary voltage decreases due to fewer turns, the secondary current must increase correspondingly, assuming the load demands sufficient power and that the transformer continues to operate near its ideal conditions.
