Hey everyone, today we're answering problem number four from chapter one of the principles of modern business statistics textbook.

In this problem, there are three parts.

In part a, we are asked to find how many elements there are in the dataset.

In part b, we are asked to find how many variables there are in the data set.

And then in part c, we're asked to classify those x amount of variables into either categorical variables or, quantitative variables.

So let's start off with part a.

How many elements are there? the data set are defined as the things that data are being collected on.

So what are we collecting data on? well, clearly, we're collecting data on these schools.

Also, an easy way to see this is that you actually can just look at the title and they tell you data for seven colleges and universities.

All right, moving on to part b, where we are asked to find how many variables there are.

So variables are characteristics of interest about the elements.

So what are we interested in finding out about these colleges and universities? we're interested in finding out what state they're in.

Number one, number two, their campus studying type, number three, their endowment in billions of dollars, number four, the percentage of their applicants that were admitted, and number five, their ncaa division.

So there are clearly five points of interest for characteristics of interest regarding the elements, which in this case are the colleges and universities.

We know that there has to be five variables.

We have to classify those into categorical or quantitative.

Categorical variables tend to deal with things that are not numeric, well, they could be either numerical or non -numerical, but categorical variables deal with things that are labeled or name, and typically don't have numbers more often than not.
