The aluminium metal crystallizes in cubic closed packed structure. The coordination number of each aluminium atom is $12 .$ But the coordination number of silicon atoms in its crystal structure is $4 .$ Therefore, the atoms of aluminium in its crystal structure are more tightly packed than the atoms of silicon in its crystal structure. Therefore, the density of aluminium is more than that of silicon.

in this podcast, we're continuing to look at lattice structures, and so what we're looking at is the coordination number. That is the number of other particles that a particle touches in a crystal lattice. So what we will be discussing is the density of solid, and so the density of a solid depends on the packing of the atoms. And further to this, it depends on the coordination number off the atoms. So so the greater the coordination number than the more tightly the atoms will be packed. And so we will have a higher density. So, for example, higher coordination number increases packing an entire this increases density. So, for example, the aluminum crystallizes in the cubic close packed structure, and so the coordination number off each of the. However, the coordination number of the silicon atom is fourth.
