Okay, so this question, being one of the last questions in the chapter, is actually pretty straightforward.
00:06
It's nothing, if you've done some of the previous problems, it's nothing you haven't seen before.
00:12
So they give us the density of an osmium piece, of an osmium block, i'm guessing, right? and they want us to express the density in grams per centimeter cubed.
00:30
Want it to be in grams per centimeter cubed, right? and so i took the liberty of putting some of the conversion factors that we're going to need to do that using dimensional analysis on the right side of the page.
00:45
So i got those from units of measurement in chapter 1, section, excuse me, section 1 .3.
00:54
One thing we're going to need though is going from centimeters cubed or going from meters cubed to centimeters cubed right and the way that we're going to do that is we can cube this conversion factor so we can go one centimeter cubed is going to be one centimeter cubed which is going to be equal to 10 to the minus second meters cubed, which is equal to 10 to the minus six meters cubed.
01:32
So that's going to come in handy when we're trying to convert this density to what they want us to convert it to.
01:38
So the way that we're going to do that is we're going to just plug it in, right? so kilograms, this is five significant figures.
01:47
That's pretty neat.
01:49
So we're going to have to around our answer to five significant figures.
01:53
So we'll convert to grams first, it looks like, right? so we have 10 to the third grams.
01:59
Remember, i took that right off that big table.
02:03
And then we're going to convert the meters cubed to, oh yeah, i'd screw that up.
02:16
Give me one second, right? so our meters cubed has to cancel out.
02:22
So that 10 to the minus six meters cubed is going to to go on top.
02:26
Sometimes i still struggle when i write it out like this to make sure that i'm putting my units in the right place.
02:33
So before you equate the whole thing, make sure that you're crossing your units out.
02:38
Right...
