The inverse function $f^{-1}$ of a function $f$ essentially reverses the roles of the input and output of $f$. If $f(a) = b$, then $f^{-1}(b) = a$. In other words, to find $f^{-1}(4)$, we need to determine the value of $x$ for which $f(x) = 4$.
