Question
The proportions of the elements that make up the asteroid 433 Eros are similar to those that make up Earth. Scientists believe that this similarity means that 433 Eros and Earth formed around the same time. If another asteroid formed after Earth formed a solid crust, and if this asteroid was the product of a collision between Earth and an even larger asteroid, how would the new asteroid's composition differ from that of 433 Eros?
Step 1
- Earth's crust is primarily composed of lighter elements and minerals compared to its mantle and core. Common elements include oxygen, silicon, aluminum, iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium. These elements are often found in the form of silicate Show more…

How does the composition of an asteroid differ from that of a comet nucleus?
The mass of the asteroids is found mostly in the larger asteroids, so to estimate the total mass we need to consider only the larger objects. Suppose the three largest asteroids—Ceres (1000 km in diameter), Pallas (500 km in diameter), and Vesta (500 km in diameter)—account for half the total mass. Assume that each of these three asteroids has a density of 3 g/cm3 and calculate their total mass. Multiply your result by 2 to obtain an estimate for the mass of the total asteroid belt. How does this compare with the mass of the Oort cloud?
Asteroids, meteors, and comets all orbit the Sun in elliptical patterns and often cross paths with Earth's orbit, making life a little tense now and again. Asteroids are large rocks (bodies under $1000 \mathrm{km}$ across), meteors range from sand particles to rocks, and comets are masses of debris. A few asteroids have orbits that cross Earth's orbits- called Apollos or Earthcrossing asteroids. In recent years, asteroids have passed within $100,000 \mathrm{km}$ of Earth! The asteroid 433 or Eros is the second largest near-Earth asteroid. The semimajor axis of its orbit is 150 million $\mathrm{km}$ and the eccentricity is $0.223 .$ Find the polar equation of Eros's orbit.
