The stereochemistry of base-catalyzed deuterium exchange has been examined for 23-A, where $X=C N$ and $C O P h$. When $X=C N$, the exchange occurs with $99 \%$ retention of configuration, but with $\mathrm{X}=\mathrm{COPh}$, only about $30 \%$ net retention is observed. Explain these contrasting results.
