Hall Effect

The Hall effect is a fundamental phenomenon in which a voltage (Hall voltage) is generated across an electrical conductor, transverse to both the current flow and an applied magnetic field. This effect is exploited in Hall probes to measure magnetic fields, as the magnitude of the voltage is proportional to the perpendicular component of the magnetic field.

Magnetic Field Components

Magnetic fields are vector quantities that have both magnitude and direction. In the context of Hall measurements, only the component of the magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the conductor (or the direction of current flow) contributes to the Hall voltage. Any deviation from perpendicularity reduces the effective field sensed by the probe.

Sensor Orientation

The correct orientation of a Hall sensor relative to the magnetic field is critical for accurate measurements. When the sensor is not perpendicular to the field, it only detects the perpendicular component, leading to a reading that is lower than the true field strength. If the magnetic field lies entirely in the plane of the sensor, no perpendicular component exists, and the Hall probe will not register the field at all.
