Hello, so in this video we are looking at a family of parametric curves that we are interested in graphing a few of, looking at their behavior, basically, and what they share in common.
00:13
So i've started out by having decimals here open, and i put the x and y coordinates in here in terms of the parameter t.
00:24
So x is given by our 2c t minus 4 t cubed.
00:28
Y is given by minus c t squared plus 3 t to the fourth.
00:33
And here we have x and y graft, and this is from t varying from 0 to 10.
00:44
So we're going to look at positive t for the moment, and this is just for simplicity, and then we'll see how we get negative t from that.
00:53
So i'm going to start out.
00:55
I have this slider here that allows me to vary the constant c.
00:58
So i'm starting out with c equals 0.
01:01
And for c equals 0, this 2 ct here goes away because c is just 0.
01:09
And the minus ct squared goes away.
01:12
That's also 0.
01:13
And so our x coordinate is negative 4t cubed, which starts out at 0 and then decreases, becomes more and more negative as to.
01:22
Increases.
01:23
So we're starting here and moving this way.
01:26
And the y coordinate is going to be 3t to the fourth, which again starts at zero and then increases.
01:36
So we're moving upward.
01:38
And so we're moving to the left and up as t increases, which makes sense.
01:41
We're starting here at the origin and we're moving to the left.
01:46
And as we decrease c, if we make it more and more negative, we see that this curve is flattening out of it, but it roughly has the same behavior.
01:56
And this makes sense because when c is negative, we have a negative coefficient times a positive c, a positive t, sorry, a negative coefficient times a positive t.
02:10
So this is still negative.
02:12
And so you're taking negative plus the x coordinate minus 4t cube, which was negative to begin with.
02:17
And so our new x coordinate is is still negative and it's still becoming more and more negative as t increases.
02:25
Similarly over here, negative c is actually going to be positive because c is negative.
02:30
And so this t squared is also positive and increasing as t increases.
02:36
And so you add these two positive things together.
02:39
You see that you're still just going up as t increases.
02:44
So again, we're starting at the origin and we're moving to the left and up.
02:49
So now when we move c to be positive, you see something very interesting happens.
02:57
You see that we develop, we're sort of going down and to the right, and then we go back.
03:04
And if i zoom out a little bit, you can see where actually we just keep shooting in this direction.
03:12
So why is this going on? well, when c is positive, you see that these two terms and these two terms, are actually of opposite sign now.
03:23
So the 2c t is now positive and the negative 4t cubed is still negative.
03:30
And for small values of t, lower order terms actually win out.
03:37
Why? well, if you have a number less than one, when you cube it, for example, it gets smaller...
