Now, you'll find, as we get further into this answer, that our answer is yes, we do think that species interactions are conditional and dynamic, and certainly that's the book's perspective on this.

By conditional, we mean that one thing can happen only if something else happens to, or if we change the conditions, if we change the circumstances, we'll get a different outcome.

And the best example of this is the mutualism between ants and leafhoppers and spiders.

Remember that leafhoppers are these insects that suck sugar water out of the flora of plants.

That passes through the body of the leaf hopper, comes out the other end, and then it's lapped up by the ants who drink it for themselves and take it back to their babies.

And so the ants benefit from that interaction because they get food from the leafhoppers.

And the question is, what do the leafhoppers get, if anything? and what the book describes this set of experiments in which it was shown that when spiders are present, the ants protect the leafhoppers from the spiders, and the leafhoppers have higher survivorship rates.

And that means that when the spiders are present, you have a mutualistic interaction, a mutualism.

However, those experiments also found that if the spiders were absent, the leafhoppers didn't benefit in any way whatsoever...
