All right, the topic we are going to talk about for this question is the theory of island biogeography.
00:08
This theory was developed by two scientists, pretty famous scientists, e .o.
00:14
Wilson and robert macarthur.
00:16
Now, these guys developed this theory that is based on immigration of new species from nearby land masses or mainland and also by the extinction of species that already inhabit an island.
00:32
You see my drawing over here.
00:33
I have an island and have some water in between.
00:36
Of course, it would surround the island.
00:38
And then over here to the right, we have our main land or our landmass.
00:44
So what this theory states is that basically the more species that are present on island increases the chances that there will be extinction of certain species because with more species comes more competition.
01:02
And with more competition, you are limiting those resources that are available.
01:07
And just take, for example, if you have a grassy area on the mainland, and you have deer, elk, lots of other herbivores, and they are overpopulated, and they begin to eat all of those grasses, which are their resources for food, eventually, over time, that food resource is going to be depleted and quite possibly go extinct.
01:38
So that's what we're talking about here...
