Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP)

TTP is a life?threatening disorder characterized by widespread formation of microthrombi in arterioles and capillaries, which leads to organ ischemia and systemic complications. It often results from a deficiency or inhibition of the ADAMTS13 enzyme, which normally regulates the size of von Willebrand factor multimers, thereby preventing unwarranted platelet adhesion and aggregation.

Thrombocytopenia

Thrombocytopenia refers to a low platelet count in the blood. In the context of TTP, this occurs because platelets are consumed during the formation of microthrombi, contributing to bleeding risks and other hematologic abnormalities.

Schistocytes

Schistocytes are fragmented red blood cells that occur when red blood cells are mechanically damaged as they pass through occluded or narrowed blood vessels. Their presence is a key diagnostic indicator of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, such as that seen in TTP.

Elevated Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH)

Elevated LDH is a laboratory finding that indicates increased cell turnover or tissue damage, including hemolysis. In TTP, the high LDH level reflects the ongoing destruction of red blood cells and is an important marker in the diagnosis of hemolytic processes.
