Problem 56 Easy Difficulty

Use the following graph, which shows the maximum and minimum normal temperatures in January for several cities in the United States.
(TABLE CAN NOT COPY)
a. Complete the following table. In the row labeled "Expression," write a numeric expression for the difference between the maximum and minimum temperature in January for each city. In each block of the row labeled "Difference," calculate the difference between the maximum and minimum temperature in January for each city.
(TABLE CAN NOT COPY)
b. Which of the cities in the graph had the greatest difference in maximum and minimum temperatures?

Answer

a. $$
\begin{array}{|l|l|l|l|}
\hline & \text { Fairbanks, AK } & \text { St. Cloud, MN } & \text { Denver, CO } \\
\hline \text { Expression } & -2-(-9) & 12-(-4) & 43-15 \\
\hline \text { Difference } & 7 & 16 & 28 \\
\hline

we needed to make an expression showing the difference between these two temperatures. So we do negative two minus the negative 19 we do 12 minus negative. Four. We do 43 minus 15 and then we actually calculate these and see which one is the greatest. So negative two minus and negative 19 is like saying negative, too. Last 19. Turns out that that is a positive 17 12 minus negative for is like 12 plus four. That 16 and 43 minus 15 is the most straightforward of all these, and that is 28 meaning Denver. Colorado has the biggest difference between that high temperature and low.
