But before we use it, let's review why the vertical line test works. Remember that the definition of a function says that for every input there is exactly one output. Now inputs are X values outputs are why so That means that for every X value, there can only be one. Why a vertical line test? And I'm going to just draw a blue line right through my graph here. Ah, vertical line test says if I could put anywhere on my graph, If I can put a vertical line through my function and it intersects at more than one place, that means it fails this definition. And as you can see, this one fails because for this ex whatever value of X I have on that blue line, I have two different wise one of the first quadrant and one in the fourth. So the vertical lines should Onley ever touch the function in one place for any spot on the graph. This graph fails, so it is not a function
