Use this list of important industrial compounds (and Figure 14.8$)$ to answer the following questions regarding: $\mathrm{CaO}, \mathrm{Ca}(\mathrm{OH})_{2}, \mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{CO}_{2} \mathrm{H}, \mathrm{CO}_{2}$ $\mathrm{HCl}, \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{CO}_{3}, \mathrm{HF}, \mathrm{HNO}_{2}, \mathrm{HNO}_{3}, \mathrm{H}_{3} \mathrm{PO}_{4}, \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{4}, \mathrm{NH}_{3}, \mathrm{NaOH}, \mathrm{Na}_{2} \mathrm{CO}_{3}$(a) Identify the strong Bronsted-Lowry acids and strong Bronsted-Lowry bases.(b) List those compounds in (a) that can behave as Brensted-Lowry acids with strengths lying between those of $\mathrm{H}_{3} \mathrm{O}^{+}$ and $\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}$ .(c) List those compounds in (a) that can behave as Bronsted-Lowry bases with strengths lying between those of $\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}$ and $\mathrm{OH}^{-} .$
a) The strong Bronsted-Lowry acids are $H C l, H N O_{3}, H_{2} S O_{4}$The strong Bronsted-Lowry bases are $C a O, C a(O H)_{2}, N a O H$b) The compounds that can behave as Bronsted-Lowry acids with strengthslying between those of $H_{3} O^{+}$ and $H_{2} O$ are $C H_{3} C O_{2} H, H_{2} C O_{3}, H F, H N O_{2},$c) The compounds that can behave as Bronsted-Lowry acids with strengthslying between those of $H_{2} O$ and $O H^{-}$ are $N H_{3}$ .

from the list of compounds that are important industrial compounds. There are three questions that we need to answer. The first one is which of these are strong Bronston Lowry acids and strong Bronston Lowry bases. Remember Branstad Lowry Acid will completely donate a hydrogen ion in a brownstone. Larry Base will completely accept a hydrogen ion, thes strong acids and bases you should have memorized once you have them memorized. Then you can easily identify the calcium hydroxide and the sodium hydroxide as a strong bronze. Did Lowry base the HCL? The which is hydrochloric acid? Nitric acid Sulfuric acid, these air all strong Bronston Lowry acids. The next question asks you to determine the Bronx. Did Lowry acids that have strength line between the hydro Nia, my on and water thes air? What we classify as weak acids, if it's not a strong bronze, did Larry Acid with a hydrogen ion that is obvious to be donated, meaning it's not one that you've memorized a strong, then it must be weak. Here we have a CD, Kassid. This is a weak acid, so this would be one for which we would list in Part B. We have carbonic acid should be another Hydrofluoric acid. Nitrous acid, phosphoric acid, thes air. All the week Bron stood Lowry acids with strength lying between hydro knee um, and water. The Bronx did. Lowry bases that have strengths. Lying between hydroxide and water are the week bases. Thes week bases would include ammonia and the carbonate down here now, although this is a base, calcium oxide is a base, and carbon dioxide is an acid. We wouldn't classify these as bronze did Lowry acids and bases. It would be more obvious how the this behaves as a and a base, and this behaves is an acid in terms of the Louis definition, if I'm not quite sure if your instructor wants you to identify this as a weak acid and this as a week base in terms of Bronstein Lowry. If I were to classify these last two, this one calcium oxide would be a strong Bronston Lowry base, and this would be a week Bronston Lowry acid
