Here's the equation of a relation, and we want to grab it on a calculator. Now that equation does not look like the equation of a circle. It looks more like the equation of a parabola, as we learned about in the last section of the chapter, and it would be a problem that open sideways instead of up or down. Now, what we want to do to graph this in the calculator. First of all, what I like to do is put the why on the left side, and then we want to square root both sides of the equation to isolate why. So we get y equals plus or minus square root X. So when we put that into the calculator, we're going to type it in as two different functions, one with the plus and one with a minus. So it's going to look like this. Why equals square root X? That's the one with the plus, and then y equals the opposite of square root X. That will be the one with the minus and then to take a look. I'm going to try zoom decimal, which will be zoom number four and let's see what that looks like. Yes, we did get a sideways parabola, and the top half of the problem was thief function that had the positive square root. And the bottom half of the problem was the function that had the negative square root.
