Hey everyone.
00:02
Today we're answering a question from chapter 16 of the textbook, which asks us what are some ways that a seller might reassure a buyer of goods who is faced with imperfect information.
00:18
And one of the best ways is in the goods market, the seller might offer a money back guarantee.
00:31
Now a money back guarantee is essentially an agreement that functions as a promise of quality of the good itself.
00:49
So this strategy may be especially important for a company that sells goods through mail order catalogs or over the web, where customers cannot actually see or touch the products or understand their functionality the best because it's online or it's through mail delivery or packaging services.
01:11
So money -back guarantees really work well with that.
01:19
And it encourages people to buy something even if they are not certain that they want to keep it.
01:26
Because obviously, as it sounds, they can get their money back.
01:29
So a money back guarantee is a great way for sellers to reassure buyers who are faced with imperfect information.
01:36
I would say a second way is that sellers may offer a warranty.
01:47
And a warranty is another kind of promise to fix or replace the good at least for a certain period of time.
01:59
And it's just another example of explicit reassurance that a seller can provide.
02:06
And i think the last example of explicit reassurance that a seller could provide is through the form of a service contract.
02:24
Now, a service contract is when the seller may offer a buyer a chance to buy a service contract, where the buyer pays an extra amount and the seller agrees to fix anything that goes wrong.
02:38
For a sex period of time.
02:43
Service contracts are often an option for buyers of large purchases, such as cars, houses, and appliances.
03:00
So those are obviously three explicit ways of reassurance, but oftentimes there are also unstated guarantees.
03:19
For example, in a movie theater, if you come out complaining about, how bad the movie is, you may be refunded your ticket price, which is super nice...
