Fair Value Measurement

This concept involves determining the value of the noncash asset based on its current market conditions, appraisals, or other objective valuation techniques. In many noncash transactions, the fair market value of the asset is used to measure the amount of consideration received in exchange for the stock, ensuring that the reported value reflects its true economic worth at the time of the transaction.

Book (Historical) Value Measurement

When the fair value of a noncash asset is not readily determinable or is unreliable, the asset may be valued based on its historical or carrying amount on the company’s books. This measurement approach uses the recorded cost or net value of the asset, which may not reflect current market conditions but provides a consistent basis for accounting.

Par or Stated Value Allocation

Even when the overall consideration for noncash assets is measured using fair or book value, the issuance of stock is often recorded by allocating a nominal par or stated value to the shares issued, with any excess value recorded as additional paid?in capital. This approach ensures that the elements of the stock’s value are appropriately reported in the company’s equity accounts.
