Today we're going to be talking about valence electrons and how they kind of relate to an element group number.

So first, let's talk about what are valence electrons.

So valence electrons are the electrons located in the outermost shell of an element.

Okay, so these are going to be the very, very outside electrons.

And when we say groups on the periodic table, those are columns of the periodic table.

So like this first column right here, this is all group 1a.

Now for representative elements, the number of valence electrons of an element is equal to its group number.

So just to review really quickly, a representative element is an element that has a partially filled outer shell.

So basically, this is going to be everything except our noble gases.

And the noble gases are the elements located here.

And the last group on the periodic table, group 8a, these are our noble gases.

So this is a rule of thumb.

All right, let's look at a few examples.

First, let's look at aluminum here.

So let's write out the electron configuration for aluminum.

So aluminum, you can see, is in the third row.

So that means we're going to be on the third level of all of our shells.

Now, how many electrons does aluminum have in its outer shell? well, basically, we just count its position in the row.
