problem. 31 asks what atomic masses and how it&#x27;s calculated. So one thing that you should be aware of before we discuss the atomic mass actually is that atomic mass and the mass number are not the same thing. So the atomic mass is the actual physical mass. Come on, Adam. And the mass number is simply the number of protons and the number of neutrons in an atom. So, uh, atomic mass is the weighted average mass of a given element. What I mean by a weighted average mass is that, um, basically each each element. Um, each Adam has a mass number, for instance, carbon. Here it&#x27;s typical isotope is, um, 12 atomic mass units because it has six protons and six neutrons. However, there are also different kinds of isotopes of carbon. For instance. Ah, there&#x27;s crab 12 carbon 13 incarnate 14. And so it&#x27;s the weighted averages or the relative abundances of these different isotopes that determines the atomic mass of carbon. So what I mean by weighted average is if you look at the different abundances of for carbon isotopes. Um, about 98.93% of all carbon on Earth, describing 12 1.7% this carbon 13. And then there&#x27;s just a trace amount of carbon 14 to do the weighted average you take wth e the mass number for each of these isotopes and multiply it by, um, the decimal form of the relative abundance. So 12 atomic mass units Or am you here well supplied by 0.9893 takes the carbon 12 component, you can add that to carbon 13 abundance and then, of course, 14. We can just call zero here, so that kind of contracts out. But that gives us is 11.8716 for carbon 12 0.1391 for carbon 13 which gives us the 12.107 atomic mass units that you actually see is the atomic mass of carbon on the periodic table.

So this question asks, What is atomic mass and how is it calculated? And so atomic mass is the sum of the mass of protons, neutrons and electrons in on Adam. However, since it&#x27;s, it can also be looked at as the average mass of a group of atoms. Because electrons weighs so little compared to protons and neutrons, those air not factored into the calculation so we could ignore the electrons. And so the way to calculate it is to add protons plus neutrons. And so, for example, if we&#x27;re looking at a carbon atom with seven neutrons, Carbon has six protons, and this particular one has seven neutrons, so the atomic Mass is 13 a. M U, which is atomic mass units.
