Synapse

Axonal Conduction

Synaptic Delay

Synaptic delay is the observable pause between the arrival of an action potential at the presynaptic terminal and the initiation of a response in the postsynaptic neuron. This delay provided evidence that the transmission mechanism at a synapse is distinct from that along an axon, suggesting that an additional process—such as chemical transmission—occurs at the synapse, thereby interrupting the otherwise continuous and rapid flow of the neural impulse.
