Hi, the purpose of this video is to talk about gene pools and how we calculate the allele frequencies in a particular gene pool.

So first, i'm going to start off with our definition listed below.

So what a gene pool is, if you think of a swimming pool, holds all of the water in that pool.

A gene pool holds all of the genes within a population of breeding individuals.

What i mean by breeding is they are reproducing.

Sometimes gene pools are referred to as the genetic diversity.

All the different varieties of genes that are in that particular population.

Alleles are the version of a gene.

If you remember in humans, we have two alleles that we inherit per gene because we have two biological parents.

So if you want to calculate the frequency of alleles, that is how often they're occurring in a percentage, it's fairly straightforward.

There's a simple formula listed below here where allel frequency equals the number of copies of an allele in a population divided by the total number of genes in a population.

I'm going to go ahead and give you an example here with flower color, a very simple example i've listed below.

So imagine we have flowers on a plant where blue flowers, we're going to use a capital b because it's dominant, are dominant over red flowers.
