Vaporization and Condensation

Vaporization involves the conversion of a liquid into a vapor (gas), either through boiling or evaporation, as energy overcomes the forces holding the liquid molecules together. Condensation is the process by which a vapor loses energy and transitions back into the liquid phase.

Phase Change

A phase change is the physical process during which a substance transitions from one state (solid, liquid, or gas) to another, primarily due to the addition or removal of energy which alters the arrangement and motion of its particles.

Melting and Freezing

Melting is the process by which a solid becomes a liquid as energy is added and intermolecular forces weaken. Freezing is the reverse: a liquid turns into a solid as energy is removed, allowing the particles to arrange into a more orderly structure.

Sublimation and Deposition

Sublimation is the direct transformation of a solid into a vapor, bypassing the liquid phase when the surface molecules gain enough energy to break free. Deposition is the reverse of sublimation, where a vapor transforms directly into a solid without first forming a liquid.
