Energy Level

An energy level is a quantized value that represents a specific amount of energy that a system, such as an atom or molecule, can have. In quantum mechanics, energy levels arise from the solutions to the Schrödinger equation, meaning only certain, discrete energy values are allowed for the electrons or the system as a whole.

Ground State

The ground state is the lowest energy level of a quantum system. In this state, the system possesses the minimum possible energy, making it the most stable configuration. Most systems naturally tend to be in the ground state unless energy is supplied to elevate them to a higher state.

Excited State

An excited state occurs when a system absorbs energy and an electron or part of the system moves to a higher energy level than the ground state. While in an excited state, the system is less stable than when in the ground state, and it typically will release energy (often in the form of light) as it relaxes back to a lower energy level.
