Surface Tension

Molecular Cohesion

Molecular cohesion refers to the attraction between like molecules in a liquid. At the surface, these cohesive forces are unbalanced compared to the interior, resulting in a net force that pulls surface molecules inward. This imbalance is the primary reason for the manifestation of surface tension.

Energy Minimization

The concept of energy minimization explains why liquids with surface tension naturally form shapes with the smallest possible surface area, as reducing the surface area lowers the overall energy of the system. This principle underlies many natural phenomena observed in liquids, including the spherical form of small droplets and the rise of liquid in thin tubes (capillarity).
