Colinearity

Colinearity in genetics refers to a direct correspondence between the sequential order of genetic elements on a DNA molecule and the functional or structural order in the resultant gene product. This means that the arrangement of genetic segments is reflected in the order of domains or regions in the expressed RNA or protein.

Prokaryotic Gene Organization

In bacterial cells, genes are frequently organized into operons where multiple genes are transcribed together as a single polycistronic mRNA. The linear order of the genes within the operon is maintained in the mRNA, ensuring that the order of gene products mirrors their physical arrangement in the DNA, which is an example of colinearity in gene expression.

Eukaryotic Gene Structure

In eukaryotic cells, genes are typically divided into exons and introns. Although the genomic DNA contains interruptions by non-coding introns, the process of RNA splicing removes these introns, producing a mature mRNA in which the exons are assembled in a linear sequence. This restored sequence provides a colinear relationship between the genetic information on the DNA and the structure of the resulting protein.
