00:02
So this money we're gonna talk about questions.
00:03
Somebody from tractor soon which says, what is the symbol of an ion with 16 protons, 18 neutrons and 18 electrons? what is a symbol of an eye on that as 16 proton, 16 year trans and 18 electrons? um, so let's go over how we write these symbols for adam's or for ions.
00:24
So first we write the element symbol, which is a letter, a few letters on, then to the upper left of that element symbol.
00:34
We write what's called the mass number, which i've written is egg.
00:38
So a is equal to the number of neutrons, plus the number of protons.
00:43
Then to the bottom left of the element symbol, we write the atomic number, which is equal to the number of protons that we have.
00:53
Additionally, the number of protons that we have tells us um, the atomic number.
00:59
It tells us the, um the element that we have so you can look on the periodic table or the element which was specific atomic number, and that will telling you what element symbol too.
01:11
Right.
01:13
Um so that not only tells us the atomic number of that, it tells us what element we have the number of pro charms.
01:19
Um and then we have to the upper right of the, um of the element symbol.
01:26
So to the upper right, we have the charge of the ion.
01:30
So the charge is the difference between the number of protons and the number of electrons.
01:35
Remember, protons have, ah, charge.
01:38
That's equal, but opposite to an electron.
01:40
So if you have the same number of protons and electrons, you have no charge.
01:43
And actually, when the charges zero, we don't write it in the atomic symbols and you only write the charge if it's non zero.
01:51
Um, so let's go ahead and work through this s o.
01:55
We were told we have 16 protons, 16 18 neutrons and 18 charms.
02:01
So the mass number, which is the son of the number of protons and neutrons, is 16 plus 18.
02:06
That gives us a mast number of 34.
02:09
Then we know that our atomic number is equal to our number of protons.
02:14
So our atomic number is 16.
02:16
And if you look on the periodic table for the element with an atomic number of 16 we see that that sulfur so the element symbol we're gonna use is s for sulfur...
