All right, so today we're going to address the question that basically asks what happens when a really moist wind from an ocean comes on shore and encounters a mountain range.
00:16
So before i go into any of the actual answers, let's kind of draw it out really quick because i feel like that's one of the best ways to kind of visualize it.
00:28
So what we have here is going to be, let's see, i'll go for blue for ocean here.
00:40
So we have an ocean, then we have, let's say, a little bit of land here, and then we have mountain range, and then more land.
00:52
So when we have the really kind of moist air coming in from the ocean here, that's going to kind of keep going until it reaches any obstacles.
01:05
And so when it reaches that obstacle, which in this case is going to be the mountain range here, as it kind of rises up here, it can't hold as much moisture as did when it was very kind of closer to ocean level.
01:22
So what happens is that clouds will form on this side.
01:29
And as it continues to rise, there will be precipitation or rainfall, snowfall, what have you.
01:37
And this will happen all the way up until there is pretty much not much moisture left in that air.
01:48
So as the air kind of cools again, doesn't hold as much moisture, clouds form, and there's precipitation.
01:57
Then on the other side, when the rest of the air, now moisture, not as moisture dense, falls on the other side.
02:13
It kind of warms back up again a little bit.
02:18
And that also increases the amount of moisture it can hold too.
02:23
And so, for instance, if on, let's say, on this opposite side of the mountain, there is maybe a little bit of moisture left over from some type of event.
02:34
That moisture will actually be absorbed back into the now warming not moist air.
02:46
And so basically what that means is that this whole side of the mountain range is going to be very, very not tropical, but it's going to be a very high level of precipitation and moisture as well.
03:13
While on this side, we're going to see very low levels of precipitation, and it'll also be very dry.
03:27
So this is what we call a rain shadow.
03:32
And it's kind of going back to the actual questions that we have here.
03:38
A states that as the air rises, it's a pulls moisture from the ground, causing high elevations to be drier...
