Open Circuit Condition

In an open circuit, such as when a switch is open, the circuit is incomplete and no current flows. Because current (I) is zero, any element that depends on current to develop a voltage drop (according to V = I×R) will have zero voltage across it, provided that there are no leakage currents.

Kirchhoff's Voltage Law

Kirchhoff's Voltage Law states that the sum of the potential differences around any closed loop in a circuit must equal zero. In the case of an open circuit, the entire supply voltage appears across the open element (the switch), while components like resistors in series with the open switch will have no voltage drop due to the absence of current.

Ohm's Law

Ohm's Law, defined as V = I×R, implies that in the absence of current (I = 0) there will be no voltage drop across a resistor. This is why, in an open circuit situation, even though a resistor is present, negligible or zero voltage is measured across it.
