question number one in this section asks you what happens when you add water to an acid and how the pH of the solution changes. I'm assuming that they're suggesting more specifically what happens when you add water to ah solution that contains an acid that already has hydrogen ions that have been created due to the dissociation of the acid. If we were to add more water to this acidic solution and increase its volume, then we're not going to change the number of hydrogen ions present. But we are going to change the volume, so the concentration of the hydrogen ions as the volume increases is going to decrease. And as the hydrogen ion concentration decreases, then pH being equal to the negative log, the hydrogen ion concentration is going to increase. So when we dilute and acid, the hydrogen ion concentration decreases. But the pH increases
