Hey, numerade, got a video for you on a motor unit, what a motor unit is, what it does.
00:09
So the motor unit is simply the branches of one epharent neuron and the muscle fibers that it affects.
00:27
So, for example, the green here represents a neuron, and that neuron branches, off and connects to three separate muscle fibers or muscle cells.
00:45
That would represent one motor unit.
00:50
Now, obviously, in a real motor unit, there's going to be a whole lot more cells involved, but that would get really messy to draw, and you get the idea here.
01:02
Now, at the same time, they're not, they're not.
01:10
Separated, each motor unit is not separated from lots of other motor units, rather they would be integrated.
01:24
So there's another eferr neuron and it's going to contract, it's going to come in contact with its own set of muscle cells and it's getting messy so i will try and draw it any better than that but just so that you understand you have motor units integrated with other motor units and any given muscle couple of things about motor units that you might need to know so first of all in a motor unit all of the fibers that the that particular neuron communicate with are all the same type of fiber in terms of whether they're slow or fast, aerobic fast or anaerobic fast.
02:27
So one motor unit is going to control all the same types of fiber.
02:35
Secondly, in a motor unit, when an action potential is started from that motor unit, all the myofibrils, excuse me, all of the muscle fibers that it controls are stimulated to contract at the same time.
02:59
So all of the fibers contract anytime a motor unit signals or produces an action potential.
03:19
Third, motor unit is distributed throughout the muscle.
03:25
So if there is a motor unit that is affecting your bicep, it's not just going to affect the part of your bicep closest to your shoulder.
03:41
It's going to affect the entire length of the bicep because those cells are going to be distributed throughout the muscle.
03:50
But remember, there will be other motor unit.
03:54
That are integrated with that one, they just don't all fire at the same time...
