Hello there, students.
00:01
Today we're going to be answering this question in regards to the chapter on human interactions with the biosphere.
00:09
And the question reads, which of these choices are an indirect value of species? is it participation in biogeochemical cycles, participation in waste disposal, provisions of freshwater, prevention, of soil erosion or all these are correct.
00:38
You guys can pause the video, pick which ones you believe is the correct answer, and we'll go over this shortly.
00:45
Okay now, so what is an indirect value mean for species? well an indirect value is basically the benefits derived from the goods and service provided by an ecosystem that are used indirectly by an economic agent.
01:11
And it sounds a bit confusing, but an example of it is like an agent at some distant from an ecosystem may derive benefit from drinking water that has been purified as it passes through the ecosystem.
01:28
So that's one example that we can bring up.
01:33
And when we read more into the subject, when they bring up how indirect value is how it promotes biodiversity, they bring up saying to bring about the preservation of wildlife, it is necessary to make more people aware of biodiversity as a resource of immense value.
01:59
If we want to preserve wildlife, it is more economically to save the ecosystem, then force it on individual species and how it's useful towards humans and how the surface it to be an indirect value because they are passive and it is not easy to calculate a dollar amount associated with them.
02:29
So for our survival, that we have to depend on the functions of the ecosystem performance for us.
02:41
So based off of that, those information, which one would help when it comes down to for species and promoting for biodiversity? the participation of biochemical cycles? well, yeah, think about your biochemical cycles.
03:00
Your carbon cycle, your nitrogen cycle, and your phosphorus cycle that does indirectly help with the environment to provide us the things that we need...
