Problem 6 Easy Difficulty

Which of the following is the strongest oxidizing agent: $\mathrm{VO}_{4}^{3}, \quad \mathrm{CrO}_{4}^{2-},$ or $\mathrm{MnO}_{4}^{-} ?$

Answer

The standard reduction potential of the transition metals is as follows:
$\mathrm{VO}_{4}^{3-}=-1.19 \mathrm{V}$
$\mathrm{Cr} \mathrm{O}_{4}^{2-}=-0.13 \mathrm{V}$
$\mathrm{MnO}_{4}^{-}=1.51 \mathrm{V}$
since, $\mathrm{MnO}_{4}^{-}$ has highest reduction potential therefore, it is strong oxidizing agent and $\mathrm{VO}_{4}^{3-}$
has lowest reduction potential therefore, it is weakest oxidizing agent among these. Hence, the
increasing order of oxidizing power is as follows;
$\mathrm{VO}_{4}^{3-}<\mathrm{CrO}_{4}^{2-}<\mathrm{MnO}_{4}^{-}$

Okay, So these questions ask us to Did her mind see oxidizing ability off vanadium oxide, chromium oxide and magnesium oxide? Um, and there are two ways to solve these problems. The 1st 1 is to check the three elements reduction potential from appendix L from the textbook. And I have already write downs the three formulas for the reduction off the three elements on. We can see that for vanadium to reduce minute vanadium. It takes 91.1. I vote on dhe to reduce chromium. It will take 19 0 point once revolt on for reducing the magnets oxide election vote is passing 1.507 votes. So from the Electron Volt, we know that Magnus oxide will be the most easily reduced compound among the stream. However, I'II think this is now the most straightforward A way to solve the problem. Another way is to look at the electron charge off ish element. So foursome. So this is a massive number one and for meth and number two, we look at the election. Look at the charge of each element for vanadium. 04 three minus. We know oxygen has two minus charge. So the vanadium here. Well, have five plus charge to make a total charge off. Three minors. It's for grown men. 04 to minus. Same thing. Oxygen has two minus charge. So the chromium has six plus charge on before the magnesium oxide. Cem agonies well have so applause charge. So amount. Um, some agonies has, ah highest oxidation state, which means it will be more easily reduced than the two other elements. So because off that magnesia well, BZ strongest oxidizing agent.
