one says Ricky. And today we're working on a problem. Nine. So we're given eight different isotopes, and we have to determine whether they are stable based on this, uh, or whether they lie within the band of stability. Um, and this is a figure 21.2 in your textbook. So just keep in mind that blue is stable. Green is radioactive. And also all isotopes of elements with atomic numbers greater than 83 are unstable. All right, so And so the way that we can read this graph is by, um, just calculating the ratio of neutrons, two protons, and the closer it is to essentially one, um, the more stable. All right. So first we have chlorine 17 and chlorine 17 as a 20 neutrons and 17 protons. This is a ratio that is about one so stable. Next, we have calcium. 40 calcium. 40 has an atomic number of 20 and 20 prote man 20 neutrons. This is also another stable isotope because as a 1 to 1 ratio protons and neutrons business, it is atomic number of 83. I'm in this case, it has an atomic mass, It to a four. That means the ratio of of some neutrons protons is about 1.5. This will make this stable, although it's nearing instability. Oh, Iron has an atomic number of 26 in a in a mass of 56. It has a ratio off about one, so we know that this is also stable. Next, we have led 82. There are 124 neutrons, 82 protons. This is about a ratio of 1.5. So meaning let 82 a stable. Next, we have led to 11. Oh, sorry. I was saying, let 85 men led to a six. Now we're on lead to 11. Um, in this case, there are under 29 neutrons and 82 protons. This is a ratio of about 1.6. So led to 11. It's unstable. John has an atomic number of 86 which is greater than 83. So unstable. Um, carbon 14 as eight neutrons, six protons. The ratio. If we look at our graph, we'll see that the ratio or will The ratio is 1.33 and we see that carbon 14. It's stable. I hope this video was helpful. Now I'll see you in the next one
