Leiomyomas

Leiomyomas, also known as uterine fibroids, are benign smooth muscle tumors of the uterus. They are the most common pelvic tumors in women and often develop during the reproductive years. Although they can cause symptoms like heavy menstrual bleeding, pain, and pressure effects, a significant number of leiomyomas are asymptomatic and may be discovered incidentally.

Hormonal Influence on Leiomyomas

Leiomyomas are strongly influenced by hormonal factors, particularly estrogen and progesterone. Their growth is typically stimulated by estrogen, which is why they tend to increase in size or become more symptomatic during periods of high estrogen levels, such as during the reproductive years or pregnancy. Conversely, with the decline in estrogen levels during menopause, leiomyomas often decrease in size.
