Today we'll be talking about chapter 6, question 78, and comparing the electronegativities of a couple of different elements.

So first, let's start by remembering the trends that we know about electronegativity on the periodic table.

So for starters, we know that as we go across the periodic table, we have an increase in electronegativity, en.

And similarly, as we go up the periodic table, we also have an increase in electronegativity, en.

And similarly, as we go up the periodic table, we also have an increase in.

Increase in the electronegativity of the elements, which means that fluorine is actually the most electronegative element that will actually involve in bonding.

There's debate about whether helium is also even more electronegative, but that's for another day.

And so now that we have our trends written down, we can start comparing different elements.

So let's start by looking at a pretty simple example.

Let's let's look at potassium versus arsenic.

So let's just find and highlight those on the periodic table.

Here's potassium over on the far left side and here's arsenic on the far right.

Now these two are on the same period.

They're on the same row and so our increase in electronegativity going up the periodic table isn't going to matter here.

However, because we know that electronegativity increases as we go across the period, table, it's a pretty safe bet that arsenic is going to be more electronegative than potassium.
