Problem 62 Hard Difficulty

Which produces more heat?
$$\begin{array}{l}{\mathrm{Os}(s) \longrightarrow 2 \mathrm{O}_{2}(g) \longrightarrow \mathrm{OsO}_{4}(s)} \\ {\text { or }} \\ {\mathrm{Os}(s) \longrightarrow 2 \mathrm{O}_{2}(g) \longrightarrow \mathrm{OsO}_{4}(g)}\end{array}$$
for the phase change $\operatorname{OsO}_{4}(s) \longrightarrow \operatorname{OsO}_{4}(g) \qquad \Delta H=56.4 \mathrm{kJ}$

Answer

Less heat is produced in second then in first reaction.

let's determine which Oz me um reaction produces more heat. In the first one we have Oz me um solid. Mhm. Going to to to Yeah. And then Oso four solid. So here we're going from a solid free gas to a solid. The form the second one you have Oz me um solid. Mhm. Going to to to gas two Os four gas. This is a solid to guess too gas and we are asked which produces more. Mhm. So when a gas directly transforms, Okay. Mhm. Yeah. two. The solid phase. Yeah. Okay reaction is termed Mhm. As D position. Mhm. And it is an ex atomic process. Okay. When a solid he didn't yeah, directly transforms yeah. To the gas phase the reaction is termed has sublimation. Right? Yeah. And it is an end to thermic process. Therefore if we look at our two processes above going from a gas to a solid would be eggs a thermic. So this one here has the process of sublimation and this is exile thermic. Therefore um This first reaction here would be the one that produces more heat. Mhm. Yeah. Due to the process of sublimation
