Let's start with prokaryotes.

Prokaryotes have a circular genome, so they have a circular piece of dna that contains all of the genes in it.

Rna polymerases read those genes in that circular dna to make rna.

And then the ribosome attaches to the rna to translate it into protein.

One interesting thing that happens in prokaryotes is that these two processes can occur simultaneously.

So basically, as the rna is still being transcribed, a ribosome can attach to it and start translating it.

The only regulation of transcription or of gene expression, the only regulation of gene expression that happens in prokaryotes is at the transcriptional level.

So repressors or activators bind to prokaryotic dna to modulate frequency and rate of transcription.

So that is the only place where, that is the only level where gene expression is being.

Regulated in prokaryotes is a description transcription level so you can imagine either repressors or activators can bind to the dna here and either increase or decrease the affinity for the rna polymerase to bind there but then that's about it in eukaryotes it's a little bit more complex you have a lot of different levels so what i've shown here on the right hand side is sort of the overall flow of information and levels of gene expression control in eukaryotes.
