Acid-Catalyzed Dehydration

This is the process by which an acid protonates an alcohol’s hydroxyl group, making it a better leaving group and facilitating the elimination of water. In simple alcohols, the dehydration typically leads to the formation of an alkene via the creation and subsequent loss of a proton from a carbocation intermediate.

Carbocation Formation

After protonation, the departure of water yields a carbocation intermediate. The stability and reactivity of this carbocation dictate the subsequent reaction pathway. In simple alcohols, the carbocation generally undergoes deprotonation to yield an alkene, whereas in diols, additional intramolecular interactions can steer the reaction toward different outcomes.

Elimination Mechanism

The E1 elimination mechanism is commonly observed in the dehydration of simple alcohols, where the loss of water and subsequent proton removal from a neighboring carbon a leads to the formation of a double bond. This process follows a two-step reaction pathway involving the formation of a carbocation intermediate.

Intramolecular Rearrangement

In the case of diols, the proximity of a second hydroxyl group can lead to an intramolecular reaction after the formation of a carbocation. Instead of undergoing simple elimination, the adjacent hydroxyl group can interact with the carbocation, often resulting in a rearrangement that forms a more stable cyclic intermediate which rearranges further to yield a carbonyl compound.
