Crossing Over

This is the process during meiosis where homologous chromosomes exchange genetic material. The exchange occurs between non-sister chromatids during prophase I, creating new allele combinations on the chromosomes, which is fundamental to genetic variation.

Recombinant Gametes

These are gametes that contain a new combination of alleles that differ from the original parental arrangement. Although crossing over involves an exchange of segments, only half the chromatids involved in the crossover produce gametes with recombinant segments, leading to recombinant gametes forming at half the frequency of the crossover events.

Chromatid Involvement

During a single crossover event, only two of the four chromatids participate in the exchange of segments. As a result, even though a crossover event has occurred, only half of the resulting gametes inherit the recombinant segments, which directly explains why the frequency of recombinant gametes is half the observed frequency of crossing over.
